Carpet owners know the horror of finding a stain on the carpet or spilling something themselves. Carpet stains are technically avoidable but rarely are avoided. Remember acting fast is key to effective stain removal. If you can, start cleaning as soon as the stain appears by blotting the spot with a cloth.
Common Carpet Stains
These five stains are some of the most common stains we see, and here is how to clean them. When it comes to carpet cleaning, there are three ingredients that are going to be your best friend regardless of the stain. Grease fighting soap like Dawn dish soap, Oxiclean, and white vinegar. As a rule of thumb, never wipe a stain, try dabbing up the excess and carrying on with the removal process.
● Coffee and Tea
Coffee and tea stain carpets with its brown colour that can be hard to look at. Mix water white vinegar and dish soap. Spray the mixture on the stain and dab the stained area until you no longer see the coffee or tea.
● Wine
Drinking a glass or two of wine can quickly turn south when you spill some red wine on the carpet. Forget the silly “at-home hacks” and quickly mix two parts hydrogen peroxide and one part Dawn dish soap. Once you have your mixture, saturate the stain and blot away the red wine. Repeat this process until your stain is removed. Just make sure you test it on a separate section of the carpet to make sure there is no discolouration.
● Blood
Blood is one of the most problematic stains to remove and one of the most difficult ones to get out. Be very careful that when cleaning it up you don’t mix it further into the carpet. If the blood is wet, use dish soap and water gently pat the stain until it lifts. If the blood is dry, mix baking soda, water and dish soap, apply the mixture to the stain, leave for 10 minutes, then gently rub it out.
● Markers
Children’s arts and crafts can quickly turn into a stained carpet for you. Permanent marker is a really difficult thing to remove from any fabric. Washable markers, on the other hand, can be lifted with soap and water in most cases.
● Pet stains
Walking into a room and seeing that your pet has had a small accident is far less than ideal. To get rid of the smell and stain, mix Oxyclean and water, let it sit on the stain for about 10-15 minutes, then return and wipe it up. The stain should be gone after this.
If you still can’t get the stain out of the carpet, it might be time to think about hiring professional carpet cleaners or, in extreme cases, replacing portions or the carpet as a whole. Replacing the carpet can be done to avoid further damage to your carpet and floors.
